Acacia Quartet and multi-ARIA-award-winning pianist/composer Sally Whitwell collaborate to present an exciting mix of romantic and contemporary compostitions: a seldom-heard Piano Quintet by American Amy Beach, Johannes Brahms' 2nd String Quartet and two pieces composed by Whitwell herself.
The program begins with Winter Love, a romantic dedication to Sally's partner, and Downsized, a concert for toy instruments, arranged for quintet.
Amy Beach was a child prodigy on the piano and performed as a soloist with the Boston Symphony whilst still in her teens. She is now regarded as America's first successful female composer. Her piano quintet is full of lush harmonies in the romantic style of Brahms and Rachmaninov. To round off this exciting program, you'll hear Johannes Brahms String Quartet No. 2. Brahms, ever a perfectionist, is rumoured to have destroyed 20 string quartets before allowing his first quartet to be published.
