Thursday 1 August or Friday 2 August, 2019
MLC School’s Australian Music Day (AMD) returns with another exciting program of performances and workshops geared towards Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students who take elective Music, including HSC Music 1, Music 2 and IB Music.
MLC School welcomes students from all schools wishing to enhance their creative potential.
Students choose one of two programs which guide a journey through the creative process and give them the opportunity to not only compose music for various ensembles but also hear their work performed live. AMD is Australia’s premier schools’ composition day which features the very best of a wide range of Australian contemporary music.
Students will hear works performed live by professional musicians and learn about the creative process of composing and songwriting in a workshop setting. Students have the opportunity to write their own music on the day which will be performed live. Expert feedback is then given by the musicians and presenters.
An education kit focusing on these works will be available for purchase in advance or on the day. These resources provide in-depth analyses of the chosen music and bring out students’ creative potential through various performance, analysis and composition exercises.
ART MUSIC FOCUS
Acacia Quartet and Matt Withers
Acacia Quartet and Matt Withers will perform Robert Davidson’s Landscape for string quartet and guitar. The work draws upon the composer’s fascination with certain geographical features and a sense of place which filters through into the music. Students will learn about various string quartet textures, receive tips on how to compose for guitar and be challenged to think about our natural and urban environments as inspiration for composition.
