TEXTURED - LAYERS OF ART
A unique pairing of music and art, presented by classikON.
Fibre artist and classikON founder Kate Tribe shares a selection of improvised cross-stitch artworks, each stitched to explore a personal yet universal issue, such as a full life, grief, and the ebbs and flows of friendship. Inspired by her pieces, four wonderful groups perform compositions, selected to express the story of each design, with music ranging from classical to jazz.
Besides the Sirius Chamber Ensemble, Duo Blockstix and Elysian Fields, Acacia Quartet will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous String Quartet KV421.

QUEER ARTS FESTIVAL VANCOUVER
Acacia Quartet is delighted to be invited to the Queer Arts Festival in Vancouver to once again perform Lyle Chan's epic 'An AIDS Activist's Memoir in Music'. We'll be joined on stage by composer Lyle Chan, telling his incredibly moving story.
String Quartet: An AIDS Activist’s Memoir was sketched in the crisis years 1991-1996, but only completed some 20 years later.
The 90-minute work is a tour-de-force of emotionally powerful music, sometimes agitated, sometimes tender, but always beautiful. It contains reflections of historic events, portraits of famous activist friends now dead, and unusual effects like the use of police whistles to recall street demonstrations by ACT UP, the direct action protest group of which Lyle Chan was a core member.
In the crisis years, he and fellow activists couriered AIDS treatments from the US that were unavailable here, fiercely lobbied federal government to approve experimental treatments more quickly, and collaborated with drug companies to design clinical trials of promising new treatments.
